White Phenakistoscopeis an optical toy, which animates part of a performance, White I, by Philip Lee.

White Phenakistoscopewas made using photographs by Judy Goldhill.

To use your White Phenakistoscope:

1. Put a nail, thin stick, screw, screwdriver, or other suitable object through the hole in the centre of the wheel, from the black side to the photograph side.
2. Face the picture side to a mirror, holding the nail, screw or stick.
3. Look at the reflection of the photograph, through the slots around the edge of the wheel.
4. Spin the wheel - the photographs will leap into action, animating a short part of one of Philip Lee's live body performances.
